5 Ways to Recover from Food Poisoning Naturally

We’ve all been there: we eat something that disagrees with us, and spend the next day or two paying the price. Caused primarily by improper food handling by which bacteria is bred and spread, the symptoms of food poisoning can be most unpleasant. Feelings of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and diarrhoea are just some of the most common issues that arise as a result of a bout of food poisoning.

The bacteria responsible for food poisoning are primarily found in meats, seafood and dairy products, which means that those who eat a plant-based diet significantly lower their chances of it occurring (our children, who have grown up on such a diet, have never experienced gastro or food poisoning). However, in some instances, fruits and vegetables such as lettuces and melons can be contaminated.

Today, I am going to discuss some of the ways I treat food poisoning when it occurs, so that you will know exactly what to do if it strikes you or your loved ones.

When you suffer from food poisoning, you are likely to lose more water than usual, through vomiting and diarrhoea. This means that the best thing to do initially is keeping up your fluid intake and avoiding any solid foods. Aside from that, there are several other natural remedies that can have you feeling better at a fast speed.

1. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal prevents poisons from being absorbed from the stomach into the body. It binds with and absorbs bacteria and toxins. This allows them to pass through your body quickly and harmlessly. In cases of severe food poisoning, several doses may be needed. Many people choose to take activated charcoal tablets. However, my favourite way of getting it down is to mix activated charcoal powder in with a teaspoon of our next ingredient, honey. Activated charcoal is one of the ingredients in our intestinal detox #2, which is another product I like to have on hand for stomach upsets.

2. Honey:

Honey can be taken alone or added to tea, and has antibacterial properties. It also controls the formation of excess acid in the stomach. The natural sugars in honey can also help to give a much-needed energy boost when not much can be gained from food sources.

3. Ginger:

Ginger has been used for thousands of years to treat a range of different ailments. This wonderful herb improves both the absorption and assimilation of nutrients and helps with digestion. This is what makes it a fast-acting remedy for nausea and vomiting. You can easily make fresh ginger tea by boiling a teaspoon of grated ginger in a cup of water for a few minutes. Again, if you desire a little sweetness, honey is a good option.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Although it is acidic, the way the body metabolises apple cider vinegar means it has an alkalising effect. This makes it most helpful in relieving food poisoning symptoms. Additionally, it can kill bacteria in the stomach while soothing the gastrointestinal lining. To drink it, mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a cup of hot water. A mixture of apple cider vinegar, ginger and honey in hot water also makes a soothing drink.

5. Peppermint

Peppermint is an amazing herb for overcoming food poisoning. It aids digestion, eases nausea and painful stomach and bowel spasms, and eliminates gas. Drinking peppermint tea is a wonderful way of ingesting peppermint while rehydrating the body.

When you do start feeling better, it’s important to ease back gently. Begin with bland foods like biscuits or crackers. Many people recommend the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apples and toast) to transition back to your regular diet. All these foods encourage firmer stools and the replenishment of nutrients lost during the illness. Fruit icy poles are also another good option for both hydration and some energy.
